Astrological Terms Beginning With L

Latitude (Celestial) - Measurement of distance of any planet or star north or south of the ecliptic.

Latitude (Terrestrial) - Degree of distance of any place north or south of the Earth's equator.

Leo - This regal sign is the fifth sign of the zodiac. Fixed and Fiery. Ruled by the Sun. Leo's symbol is the lion.

Libra - The seventh sign of the zodiac, Libra is the sign most concerned with relationships. Cardinal and Airy. Ruled by Venus. The exaltation of Saturn. Libra's symbol is the scales, or balance.

Lights - Astrological reference to the Sun and the Moon.

Light of the time - Another way of expressing the sect of the chart at some katarchic event. In other words if born in the daytime the light of the time is the Sun, if at night, the Moon.

Lilith - The "Black Moon", a supposed invisible satellite of the Earth, also an energy vortex in the Sun-Moon-Earth system. There is as well an asteroid called Lilith.

Line of Advantage -An imaginary axis that connects the third decan of the third and ninth houses. The Moon's North Node east of this axis is thought to be in a favorable or advantageous position.

Link - To form a linkage.

Linkage - An interaspect that is formed by any enhancement angle or a quincunx.

Linkage Angle - An angle that forms a linkage, which is any of the 4 enhancement angles or the quincunx.

Linked Persons - The 2 persons who form a linkage.

Light collection- A term used in horary astrology to describe developments when two planets not in aspect both apply to a third, slower planet that "collects their light" (unites their energies), symbolically establishing a relationship between the two.

Local Mean Time -The actual time in a given location based upon the Sun's position at the Midheaven (noon) of the place. Abbreviated LMT; also called True Local Time (TLT).

Local Space - The name for all the concepts related to how the sky appears to an observer on the Earth's surface. Astrologically, local space ideas are used to describe how planets affect the mundane affairs of everyday living for a person.

Local time - Sun time. The actual time at a location within a time zone. Noon local time occurs when the Sun crosses the meridian of that location.

Locational astrology -The practice of casting a horoscope for the place in which a person resides, or would like to reside, rather than the place of birth. This system is often used to determine the location likely to prove most congenial to a particular individual.

Logarithms - Tables by which when a planet's motion is known its position at a given time may be readily calculated.

Logjam - term for a period of time when there are a large number of planets at or near their stations. With so many planets standing still, there is a marked lack of progress in current situations, since there are few aspects happening to create change.

Long Ascension - Signs of long ascension take longer to ascend than others. Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius. Long and short ascension are reversed in the southern hemisphere.

Longitude (Celestial) - Measurement along the ecliptic in terms of signs and degrees from the point of the vernal equinox. The longitude of a planet in the 126th degree of the zodiac is 6° Leo.

Longitude (Terrestrial) - Distance in degrees, minutes and seconds of any place east or west of Greenwich, England. Also measured in hours, minutes and seconds.

Longitudinal Synchronization - A Magi Astrology term for planetary synchronization of planets in the longitudes.

Lord - Refers to the primary ruler of a sign, usually by domicile.

Lost objects - Personal possessionsare shown by the 2nd house. The house and sign placement of the 2nd ruler usually give a clue to the location of the lost object. The lost item will usually be found if it's ruler is retrograde and/or applies to a favorable aspect with the owner's ruler. A Void of Course Moon often means that the lost item will be found.

Luminaries - Lights. The Sun and the Moon.

Luna - The Moon.

Lunar Eclipse - When the Moon passes through the Earth's shadow and seems to disappear. An omen of deep transformation, often lasting 6 to 12 months.

Lunar Node - The points on the zodiac where the plane of the moon's orbit intersects the plane of the ecliptic (the Earth's orbit). These points are called the north node and the south node. They are generally considered to describe a person's karmic patterns and goals.

Lunar Mansions - 27 traditional sectors (nakshatras) of the zodiac, where the Moon spends her time on a day by day basis. Each mansion, of 13° 20' duration, has a specific influence, especially if Moon, Sun, Ascendant, or Ruling Planet are placed there.

Lunar period -The time it takes the Moon to return to a particular point in the zodiac; the Moon's zodiacal period, a little less than twenty-seven days, eight hours.

Lunar Return - Time of the month when the transiting Moon is conjunct natal Moon.

Lunar Return - A very significant time in life when the progressed Moon reaches the conjunction with natal Moon for the first time at around age 27, marking the first part of the difficult transition from the phase of Youth to the phase of Maturity associated with the Saturn Return. The second Lunar Return occurs around age 54 and the third around age 81. See Saturn Return.

Lunar return chart -A chart cast for the time the Moon returns to the exact degree, minute, and second it occupied at the moment of an individual's birth.

Lunation - A lunar period, measured from one place in the zodiac until the Moon's return thereto. A chart made for the moment the Moon conjoins the Sun is called a Lunation Chart.

Lunation cycle- The Moon's phases relative to the Sun as it moves from one new Moon to the next; the time interval between two successive lunations is approximately twenty-nine and one-half days, a lunar month.
